Reasons to Visit Bowra

Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary has a long reputation as a reliable birding site with a bird list of more than 200 species, including nine threatened species. Three species of Australian Babblers are present and the rare Grey Falcon has been known to breed on the sanctuary.

A number of bird monitoring programs are in place at Bowra. The main program is a Daily Bird Call which records the species seen each day. Bird observation forms are available for visitors to fill out, which can assist our staff during the Daily Bird Call. Our staff, volunteers and other visitors are a wonderful source of bird information.

Camping Facilities

Camping is in open areas adjacent to the amenities. There are facilities for a few caravans or camper trailers to access 240 volt power. This power is quite limited and not suitable for air conditioning, heating, cooking or other power-hungry uses. The water supply is bore water from the Great Artesian Basin. There are a couple of marked walks nearby including the nearby lagoon.

Our camp sites can accommodate just one vehicle with room for a van or tent.

Open fires of any type are not permitted.

Getting There

Bowra is in south-west Queensland about 16 kilometres north-west of Cunnamulla.

Directions from Cunnamulla:

  • Head west from town across the Warrego River and after about 200 metres turn right at the sign (Humeburn Rd, Golf Course, Bowra).
  • Head north about nine kilometres until you see the Bowra gate on the left. There is a black and red mailbox with a metal sign on top saying Bowra.
  • The camp and check-in area is another six kilometres along a dirt road. Once you reach the left-hand turn, follow the road past the main house to the check-in area. This road can be rough (particularly for vehicles towing) and slippery when it is wet so ring ahead for advice if you have any doubts.

Important Information before Visiting

All roads on the property are dirt and can be dusty in dry conditions and very muddy and at times impassable when wet; rainfall may close the sanctuary tracks. Vehicles over four tonnes and some 2WD vehicles are not suitable for the tracks. Please note that vehicle owners will need a recovery plan for any bogged or broken-down vehicles. Visitors will be advised before and during their stay if tracks are closed due to rain. If in doubt or any concerns arise please contact our sanctuary staff: 0455 527 698. In order to preserve and protect Bowra’s landscape and wildlife we ask that you follow instructions and information provided from the staff and volunteers on site.
